With the recent discovery that a lack of the protein BDNF may contribute to depression during pregnancy, we thought we’d share these easy tips for keeping your outlook positive during pregnancy. Remember, during this special time in your life; it is important to keep stress levels low if at all possible. So try using these recommendations to increase your positivity.
1. Make time for rest
Ask any woman who has been pregnant, and she will likely tell you that she was always tired during her pregnancy. Growing a baby takes a toll on your body, and leaves you feeling fatigued. It can be difficult to be upbeat and cheerful when every molecule in your body is crying out for sleep. So, what’s the solution? Don’t wait for “bed time” to come to get your rest. If your body is telling you it is tired, make the time. Cancel plans, move things around in your schedule, ask your family to watch your child so you can get some sleep. Whatever it takes, make rest a priority! Your body will thank you for it and so will your mood!
2. Water therapy
During pregnancy, floating becomes super easy. Your body is suddenly the most buoyant it’s ever been! Floating on your back in a swimming pool, or trying sensory deprivation tanks (an emerging trend!) can relax your muscles and improve circulation throughout your whole body. Not to mention it works wonders at making you feel calm and comfortable. With a little relaxation, and all of those aches and pains relieved, you’ll feel like a whole new woman. Definitely a pick-me-up!
3. Rub the stress away
Did you know that massages are proven to reduce anxiety and lessen the symptoms of depression? Its tranquilizing effect can also result in an easier delivery, since your nervous system isn’t as on edge. Can’t afford to go to the spa for a prenatal massage? Not to worry. Having your partner or someone close to you gently rub your legs, feet, and shoulders can have the same effects. Just sit back, relax, and let the magic work!
4. Savor some scents
Aromatherapy is a fantastic way to relax. All you have to do is lay back and breathe it in! During pregnancy, it’s common to have aversions to strong fragrances, so look for something light and soothing – like honey, vanilla, or lavender. You can find a scented candle at any department store. Give it a light, put on some peaceful music, and let your mind unwind.
5. Create keepsakes
Being pregnant is a beautiful thing, and there is perhaps no better way to enjoy the process than connecting with your child-to-be. Creating keepsakes like scrapbooks, or writing letters to your baby, or even just taking photos of your changing body can all be great ways to add an element of fun to your pregnancy journey. While it seems like a long process right now, soon your little bundle will be here, and you’ll be on to the next phase of parenthood. Cherish these moments while they’re here!
