Steps to Sexual Health
Steps to Sexual Health is a 10 week individual program which facilitates restoration and a new perspective for individuals dealing with sexual misuse, trauma, or abuse.
Sexual abuse happens to 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men. Sexual abuse involves unwanted or coerced sexual involvement. Sexual trauma is an unwanted, unasked for, and/or an age-inappropriate sexual encounter.
Sexual abuse and trauma causes physical, emotion, and spiritual pain. Pain demands medication. Some destructive behaviors that are commonly used to “medicate” the pain of abuse are:
- overeating or not eating
- suicidal attempts
- sexual addiction
The only healthy way to deal with the pain is to acknowledge it and work through the pain and grief … When the pain is gone there is no need for medication.
Some myths we believe about perpetrators:
- They did it without thinking
- They only did it to me
- I somehow asked for it
- My perpetrator had pain
- The person was drunk or high
It’s important for you to know that it was not your fault.
The perpetrator made the choice to act out; you can stop blaming yourself. It was not your fault but only you can take responsibility for healing and moving forward.
